By-election update - 1 October 2021
An update on Council by-elections in the remainder of 2021.
There continues to be a schedule of Council by-elections to be held through the coming months to fill various vacancies that have arisen on Councils across Scotland. The current list can be downloaded from the website here, and is up to date as at 1 October 2021. The list is also given below.
It is expected that the by-election for Fort William and Ardnamurchan (2 December) will be the final by-election ahead of next year's local government elections (5 May 2022) - any vacancies that occur with 6 months of those elections remain vacant according to the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973.
As with the recent Scottish Parliamentary Election, Returning Officers delivering the by-elections have continued to comply with Covid-19 control measures including enhanced ventilation, physical distancing, additional hygeine, face coverings where appropriate and extra signage. All polling places and the count venues will be safe and controlled environments with the events operated based on guidance from Public Health Scotland, the Electoral Commission and the EMB.
If registered, voters will also have the option to vote by post uand the franchise will be the same as on 6 May.
To register to vote you must
- be aged 14 or over
- have no legal incapacity to vote
- be a citizen who has the right to remain resident in Scotland irrespective of your nationality.
